The lawyer will ask you to sign a contingent fee contract. You will be obligated to pay a percentage of the settlement or recovery in your case and to reimburse expenses that the attorney pays out for preparing and litigating your case. The fee contract can be asserted as a lien against your recovery if you later discharge the lawyer without "good cause." (See Changing Attorneys) The lawyer should sign the fee contract and give you a copy.
